Shannon is a city in Lee County located along Mississippi Highway 145 with a population of 1,753 people. The Chiwapa Creek flows through the southern portion of Shannon and remains a focal point for the city’s parks and recreation.
Shannon was named after Samuel Shannon, who actually purchased the city’s land from a Native American Chief, Chief Itawamba, in the early 19th century. The town was incorporated in 1860 when the first post office was established and the Mobile and Ohio Railroads were constructed through the community.
As time passed, several successful businesses sprouted out of Shannon including a multimillion-dollar strawberry business that was connected with Plant City, Florida, and even Coca-Cola was bottled in Shannon starting in 1915.
In more recent years, the city of Shannon has become known through its gay bar controversy in which a business named Rumors was put on hiatus from 2007 to 2013 and then refused to be reopened by the town in 2013. The refusal led to a lawsuit and the controversy was later featured in the documentary film Small Town Gay Bar.
Out of the 632 households in Shannon, there are a rough total of 437 families, and the population density of the city equates to 403.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city is predominately white and African American with 44.42% and 54.19% of the population consisting of these races, respectively.
Over 79% of the households in Shannon consist of married couples with or without children under the age of 18 years old living with them. The average household contains 2.62 people, and the average family size in Shannon is 3.18.
Shannon is a relatively young city with a median age of 29 years, and for every 100 females in the city there are 94.9 males.
The average yearly income per household in Shannon is $29,773, and the yearly income per family in the city is an average of $30,848. The per capita income in Shannon is $13,592 and about 18.4% of the overall population lives below the poverty line.
The major employer in the city is the defense contractor General Atomics, which opened a gigantic $38 million manufacturing and test facility in Shannon in 2005. Most of what is done at this facility helps the U.S. Navy in various ways.
Shannon is a part of the Lee County School District, which contains six elementary, four middle and two high schools.
Most of the best tourist attractions and fun places to experience in Shannon are located just about seven miles up the road in Tupelo, and because Shannon is so close to Tupelo it really opens up an endless amount of fun opportunities.
The most famous and popular place in the Shannon and Lee County area is the Birthplace and Museum of Elvis Presley, and as you can probably imagine this is a place where all major Elvis fans come to just like Graceland. It’s here at this museum that you can learn all about Elvis’ childhood and upbringing in his quant home in Lee County.
When it comes to doing something that is fun for the whole family, it doesn’t get much better than the Tupelo Buffalo Park. It’s at this zoo that you can experience horseback riding and be introduced to giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and many other exotic animals. This is a place in the Shannon area that you definitely will not regret going to!
Another really interesting tourism location near Shannon, is the Tennessee Williams Welcome Center. It’s here that you can learn more about the very famous playwright and all of his illustrious accomplishments that have resonated within American culture for about a century now! This is a great place to bring your friends and family for an educational and fun outing.
For all of those who love the great outdoors, the Tishomingo State Park is a great option near Shannon that offers incredible deals on cabins, and has great hiking trails, as well as a river and a community pool! For a weekend of fun in the sun this is a great local option.
For a little bit of indoor fun there is GT Lanes, which offers a great bowling alley along with laser tag, an arcade, bumper cars, a bounce house area and so much more. This is a wonderful place for the whole family to enjoy some thrills, and it’s well worth heading down to nearby Columbus to experience.
Food & Leisure
Although nearby Tupelo is well known for it’s incredible restaurants and nightlife scene, Shannon also has a lot of great places to grab a bite to eat and have a nice evening.
One of the most popular restaurants in the city is the Double Barrel Steakhouse, and it’s here that you can get incredible southern cuisine and a very authentic ambience, and of course great steaks!
Griggs Grocery and Deli is also a very popular place to eat in Shannon and it can sometimes be so packed here that it can take awhile to get seated at a table. The barbecue and daily specials are always a huge hit with the locals, and possibly the funniest part about this gem of a restaurant is that it also serves Shannon as a gas station!
Wild Hog BBQ is another restaurant we recommend, and as you can imagine this barbecue is some of the best in the entire country and is the real deal. This is one of the best barbecue joints in the region with great outdoor picnic tables and great event catering too.
When it comes to nightlife in Shannon there are a few options, and of course there are several options in nearby Tupelo. Some of the best bars in the area include Longshots Sports Bar & Grill, Blue Canoe, The Thirsty Devil and Sport’s Bar & Grill.
The current government of Shannon consists of four Aldermen named Paul Lyles, Debra Grubbs, Carl Trice and Bryant Thompson. The current mayor of Shannon is Ronnie Hallmark.
The Nettleton Court Clerk is located at 124 Short Avenue and the Shannon City Hall is located at 1426 North Street. Also the Lee County Courthouse is located at 215 S 9th Street.
Overall the crime rate is fantastic in Shannon, which is considered one of the safest areas of Lee County.
